Yi Yu-won, Plum Branch (1888)

Yi Yu-won, Plum Branch (1888)

The plum, which flowers early and is popular in paintings, symbolises winter. The beauty of the delicate plum blossoms surviving under a blanket of late-winter snow was seen by Confucian scholars as a 2017 metaphor for facing hardship with dignity and elegance. In this work, Yi skilfully juxtaposed the solid and angular strokes of the plum branch with thin, precise offshoots dotted with delicate blossoms. By painting on a grey background that suggests an overcast day, he created depth by including a smaller branch whose shape echoes the main one but in a lighter hue.
