Biography
Maria McConville painter
Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland
Style: Abstract
I am a Fine Art Graduate from the University of Ulster, Belfast. Trained as a printmaker and recently moved into painting and mixed media art. The influence of printmaking can be seen in my paintings, with the process of building up layers, adding, removing and mark making very evident in the final outcomes.
I have been an art and film teacher for the last 25 years but now deciding to dedicate more time to my own work. Having built a studio in the garden during the first lockdown, I started painting again with a renewed passion for my practise.
My work is inspired by the way rural meets urban landscapes. Belfast is a city that is surrounded by hills and countryside, so there are recurring themes and imagery that keep popping up. Colour and texture are very important as well as the process of mark making and drawing with a range of media.
Although abstract, there is definitely an essence of landscapes and manmade structures evident in a lot of my paintings. Each viewer seems to have a unique interpretation of what they see in each piece. With this, the viewing of my artwork can be quite an individual experience.
I am becoming quite established in Belfast and across Ireland as a contemporary abstract artist under the brand of Litmus Landscapes.
All works are one off originals, mostly on canvas but some are on canvas board, wood and paper.
