Biography
Chris Macauley painter
Location: Loughborough, United Kingdom
Style: Abstract
I studied art in Blackpool and Newcastle upon Tyne and have worked on various projects throughout my career from bespoke furniture making to teaching, painting being the one constant.
The first big influence on my work as a young painter was the observational painting of artists associated with the Euston Road School such as William Brooker and Euan Uglow.
Paradoxically my interest in abstract painting grew soon afterwards and ever since I have tried to resolve these two different approaches in my painting. Expressing light through colour and the arrangement of form are as important as the representation of the scene.
I am not a subject specific painter, whether I am working on still life, portraiture or landscape, I am always trying to discover what the painting is about; the object matter is not really the subject matter. Unless a commission, I chose to paint subjects that are around me rather than seeking out potentially beautiful scenes.
